Viral video clips appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate net worth of around $16bn, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.

The incident comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who encountered widespread backlash from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
